Why I love using Nearby share on my Chromebook

I take many photos for this blog on my phone, which I then need to upload. Before Nearby share, I would either have to upload to Google Drive or send the picture to my email address. It may not sound like too much of an issue, but when you need to do this on a regular basis it can get frustrating. Nearby share removes all of this frustration because it allows you to send the pictures directly to my Chromebox.

It’s a feature that anyone can take advantage of. For example, you may decide to have a clear-out and start selling your stuff on eBay. This requires you to take lots of pictures that you need to upload to the auction site. Chrome OS continues to develop over time and there are loads of nice features we’ve seen released. For me, this is one of the best because it saves me time.

What is Nearby share?

Nearby share allows you to share files from one device to another. To use it you need to ensure both devices have Nearby share activated. It allows you to easily transfer files from your phone to your Chromebook or Chromebox. You can also do it the other way by transferring files from your Chrome OS device to your phone.

If you have your phone set to take decent quality pictures. These pictures can take up a lot of storage space. You can easily use over 120 MB on five decent photos. Even more, if you set your photo settings to the max. When you have photos on your phone you need to transfer to your Chromebook to edit or upload to a website. Means you need to find a way of doing this. For me, the most important thing is the time it takes. We are all busy, so if we can find a way of doing something that is quicker than a previous method. Then surely that’s something we should be happy about using in the future.

What I love about Nearby share is that the file transfer time is really quick. You can also transfer multiple photos, files or videos all at once. It’s pretty amazing how quick it is. Your photos are transferred to your Chromebook in no time at all. Watch my video to find out how to use Nearby Share on your Android phone and Chromebook. I’ll warn you now I had only started using the feature, so I was getting used to how it works. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s much easier than I make it look in this video.

Saving files to Google Drive

Before using Nearby share one of the ways I would transfer my files from my phone to my Chromebox was using Google Drive. This works perfectly well but it’s more time-consuming. Saving files on your Android phone to Google Drive is easy to do. The only issue with this is the time it takes to upload. If you’re uploading a lot of high-quality pics it can take a while.

Also, I don’t necessarily want to keep all of the pictures I take. Once I’ve uploaded them to my blog I tend to delete them. I don’t really see the point of having them in multiple locations. This is the same if you were uploading pictures to eBay. It’s unlikely you would have any further use for the images afterwards. This means you need to remember to delete them from your Google Drive if you don’t want to keep every photo indefinitely.

You may also need to use the pictures locally rather than directly from Google Drive. If this is the case. Once you’ve uploaded them to Google Drive. You then need to download them to your Chrome OS computer. You can see how this method can become very time-consuming.

Sending pictures to my email address

Another method I used was if it was easier than uploading to Google Drive. Was to send pictures from my phone by email. I would then need to download these pictures on my Chromebox by accessing my emails. This felt like a really strange method to get a picture from one device to another. However, at times this was easier to do and it all depended on the situation.

Nearby Share is great

This is why I love using Nearby Share. I never use any of the other methods to transfer files between devices. Nearby share provides me with a much better option. Don’t get me wrong the first couple of times you use it can be more time-consuming. That’s only because it takes a little time to get used to how it works. However, once you’ve done it a couple of times it will save you so much time in the future.

I prefer using Nearby share because it uploads the pictures directly to my downloads folder. Once I’ve done what I needed to do with the pics or files. I can then decide whether I want to delete them or save them in my Google Drive if they are important. If you’ve not yet tried Nearby Share I would strongly encourage you to give it a try. I love it.
