The Samsung Chromebook 3 is an all plastic affair, which you would expect from a budget laptop. However, that does not mean it’s badly built. In fact, I really like the way this Chromebook looks.
It’s very compact in size, which makes it great for a Chromebook to use on the move. It weighs just over 2.5 lbs/1.18kg and is only 0.7 inches thick or should I say thin. It’s a very strong and sturdy laptop too, so you’ll not be worried about damaging it when taking it out with you.
Also, to help with the durability of the Samsung Chromebook 3. It also comes with a water-resistant keyboard. So if you have an accident with a glass of water there is no need to panic.
As with all Chromebook devices, one of the great benefits is battery life. You’ll be happy to know this device continues with that trend. You can get a whopping 11 hours from a single charge.
Overall, the build quality for a budget Chromebook is great.
When it comes to performance on a budget Chromebook you should not expect blazing fast speeds. However, the Samsung Chromebook 3 comes with a decent speed of 1.6GHz from the Intel Celeron processor.
Also, this device is perfect for anyone who wants a laptop to surf the internet and word processing. The performance provided for these types of tasks is absolutely fine and you’ll have no problems using the device on a daily basis.
The performance will become a problem if you want to number crunch on a really large spreadsheet. That isn’t to say it cannot cope with spreadsheet work, it can just fine, but don’t expect to use a spreadsheet with thousands of rows without some performance issues.
When it comes to Android Apps you’ll be able to use most of the basic apps available. Obviously, more intensive apps such as games with advanced graphics will not work too well. This is not a major issue though when you consider it’s a budget device, so you can’t have it all.
You’ll still be able to use majority of the apps available, which makes the Samsung Chromebook 3 very versatile. Making it great for work and the occasional play.
RAM & STORAGE
There are different models available, so it depends what you go for. All of the devices come with 4GB of RAM. This is more than enough for what you will use this device for.
4GB of RAM is absolutely fine on a Chromebook at the moment. Even some mid-range devices come with 4GB of RAM and they have no problems even when using advanced Android Apps.
The storage available is either 16GB or 32GB. The 16GB model is a little low, so you should not expect to be able to store too much on the Chromebook with this amount of storage.
Personally, if you can afford the extra money I’d opt for the device with 32GB of storage. This will give you that added space to store more files locally.
However, you don’t need to worry too much about storage because a Micro SD slot is available. This means you can easily add further storage at a later date by adding a Micro SD card.
Also, if you’re using this Chromebook for internet surfing or word processing. Then you should try to get into a habit of storing your files in the cloud. This will mean you’ll save your local storage for Android Apps. Find out more about saving in the cloud on your Chromebook.
The display is fine for the price of this device. The 11.6-inch display comes with a resolution of 1,366 by 768, so it does not provide full HD of 1,920 by 1,080. However, you should not let that put you off.
For the price, the display is actually very good and bright enough for use even in most environments. Of course, the display isn’t as good as what you’d get from a mid-range device, but the display is usually one of the compromises when buying a budget laptop.
However, the 1,366 by 768 resolution looks absolutely fine on the 11.6-inch display, so I don’t think you would be disappointed when considering how much the device costs.
It isn’t a touchscreen, so this laptop has been designed to be used as a laptop only. It also means some Android Apps may be difficult to use without having a touchscreen to use.
If you’re after a great budget laptop then you will not go far wrong with the Samsung Chromebook 3. It’s very competitively priced for a laptop, and you’ll find it hard to not be impressed when taking the price into consideration.
It’s a perfect laptop for someone who just wants to use the internet or do some word processing. In fact, if that is what you’ll spend most of your time doing. Then it makes sense to buy this laptop. Paying more when all you’ll be doing is surfing the internet could be seen as a waste of money.
It also makes for a perfect second laptop. The price means you’ll not have to be too worried about taking it out and about with you. A perfect little Chromebook for people on the move.
