I’m not really surprised that HP sold more Chromebooks than any other manufacturer in 2021. HP has been in the Chromebook business from the very beginning, so they have a lot of experience in the sector.
I was a little surprised when Lenovo overtook HP in Q3 2021 by selling more Chromebooks. However, as I mentioned at the time, it appears that was just temporary, and HP ended up selling more units overall in 2021.
The results from 2021 show Lenovo wasn’t far behind HP for Chromebook sales. This is rather remarkable considering Lenovo has only been manufacturing Chromebooks for the last few years.
HP continues to sell more Chromebooks than any other manufacturer
I’ve been following the sales results for the last three years and HP has sold more Chromebooks than any other manufacturer. When you consider HP has a long-established business with strong ties to the business and education sector. It isn’t surprising HP continues to sell more Chrome OS devices.
HP is in a strong position because they put a lot of effort into business relationships. That’s before we even look at the Chromebooks they’ve released in the last couple of years. This includes the HP x 360 and the newer HP x 2 11 Chrome OS tablet.
This combination of well-established B2B relationships and the release of great devices. Has made it difficult for other manufacturers to take the number one position from HP. Whether this will change in the future remains to be seen, but Lenovo has certainly been working hard to achieve it.
Lenovo isn’t far behind
In 2021 HP sold 10.2 million Chromebooks, which was up by 9.3% from the previous year. A great result considering the logistical issues we’ve seen globally due to covid. Coming out of covid has caused logistical nightmares for businesses due to such high demand. Therefore, it’s great to see this has not caused too much of an impact on HP Chromebook sales.
Lenovo did even better in relation to growth. Selling 6.7 million Chromebooks in 2020 and increasing this to 8.3 million in 2021. That’s a huge 23.4% increase in sales in 2021 compared to 2020.
This gives Lenovo a total market share of 20.7% in 2021, whilst HP continues to hold the largest market share at 28.8%.
Acer is in third position
The third position for selling most Chromebooks in 2021 goes to Acer. Selling 6.4 million units compared to 6.1 in 2020. That’s an increase of 4.6%. This puts Acer ahead of Dell who has been struggling in this sector for some time.
Dell once had a much bigger market share and they regularly released Chromebooks that attracted interest from the public. Over the last couple of years, Dell has failed to release any Chrome OS devices that have grabbed public attention.
Overall sales of Chromebooks up in 2021
There were over 37 million Chromebooks sold overall in 2021. Compared to 32.6 million in 2020, that’s an increase of 13.5%. A very impressive set of results considering the logistical issues we’ve seen throughout the year.
I’m sure in future years we’ll continue to see Samsung Chromebook sales increase rapidly. They sold 3.2 million units in 2021, which is a huge increase of 77.2% compared to 2020. This will be closely linked to the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2, and their decision to start selling laptops in Europe and the UK again.
