If we go back many years the majority of images found on the internet were saved in Jpeg, which is the JPG file extension. Because this was the most common image file type there are still programs today that only work with this extension.
Things have changed a lot since then and you may have come across other image file types such as WebP or PNG. If you’re downloading images from the internet and having trouble using them because of the image extension. Then you can easily change this using online tools.
Whether you want to change the image extension or not depends on what you need. For example, if an image includes transparency and you want to keep these transparent values. You would need to ensure you save the image in a format that supports this.
As I’ve already mentioned JPG is arguably the most common image type. This is mainly because it goes back many years. It’s a good image format for photos where each pixel in the image is different. This format is also useful when it comes to reducing the file size of an image.
It isn’t a suitable file format if the image includes transparency. If you have an image that includes transparency and you save that image in JPG it will lose any transparent values. Whether you’re happy with this will depend on what you’ll be using the image for. For images where you want to keep transparency you’d be better off with PNG or WebP.
Although JPG is a widely used image file type and has been used for many years on the internet. It isn’t necessarily the best file type today when it comes to reducing the file size. This is the main reason why many images on the internet now use WebP.
The image file format PNG can also be used for saving photos. However, when it comes to saving a file where most of the pixels are different, which is usually the case with photos. It’s possibly not the best file format if you wish to reduce the file size.
If you are working with images that contain vector graphics or illustrations. You will most likely find PNG is a much better option than JPEG. This is because you can tend to reduce the image file size dramatically in this situation when using PNG.
The PNG image format is something you may want to use if your image includes transparency. Although PNG is mainly used for static images, it can also be used as a video format in certain situations.
The WebP image format is something that has been around for a long time. However, you may have noticed this image format is becoming a lot more popular when saving images from the internet. This is because all websites need to ensure their website is fast for their visitors. In fact, Google considers slow websites as a poor experience for visitors, and therefore, insists websites do their best to tackle slow-loading internet pages.
Because of this many websites including blogs now save images in the WebP format. The WebP format is a great image format because it dramatically reduces the file size of an image without having a huge impact on the quality of the image. It also supports transparency. The image format is owned by Google, so browsers such as Chrome have supported WebP for a long time.
Internet Explorer, which was a popular browser from Microsoft, which has now been scrapped. Did not support WebP. Therefore, popular blogging platforms such as WordPress did not allow bloggers to upload images in WebP. This forced websites and blogs using WordPress to upload images in other formats such as PNG or JPG, and they would then use software to convert to WebP.
This meant if you visited a website using the Chrome browser you would be shown the WebP image. If you were using a browser such as Internet Explorer the image would be displayed in another format such as JPG.

The Microsoft Edge browser is based on Chromium. Therefore, it supports WebP images. As soon as WordPress was confident that most users around the world accessed the internet using a browser that supported WebP. They removed the restriction that stopped bloggers and websites from uploading images in WebP.
This means most bloggers and websites can upload images in WebP without having to use an image converter. Whether this was done during the uploading stage or whether it was done on the fly for each website visitor. It’s no longer something that bloggers or websites need to be too concerned about.
Because most on-the-fly conversion tools come at a cost to the website owner. Now that the majority of browsers support WebP; bloggers and websites will tend to upload images in the WebP format. Removing the need for any image conversion to take place. This is why over time you will find more images on the internet will use the WebP image format.
How to convert images to a different format
Although there are huge benefits to WebP. One of the disadvantages at the moment is when it comes to editing these types of images using different software packages. You may find some software packages don’t support the WebP file type.
For example, At present, it’s still the case that Google Slides, which is a Google product doesn’t support WebP. Therefore, it’s highly likely you will come across other image editing software that does not recognise it as an image format.
The good news is you can easily find image conversion tools online. There are plenty to choose from, but I would recommend using Squoosh.
