How much should you spend on a Chromebook?

The Chromebook computer success comes from it offering excellent value for money. When they were originally launched you could get your hands on one for £250/$250.

You can still buy a Chromebook today for roughly the same price. You’ll also find a lot of devices cost a lot more than this. So how much should you be spending when buying a Chromebook in 2020?

Unless you’ve got unlimited funds. It’s crucial that you do your homework and not end up paying for more than you actually need. We’ve all seen how Chrome OS has become very popular in the last two years but is spending £1,000/$1,000 on one really worth it or just a waste of money?

So recently we’ve seen a few Chromebook devices released that cost £1000/$1000 or more. You’d expect to see this happen now that Chrome OS has become a popular operating system to use for your computing needs.

The thing is can we really say these offer good value for money? Sure, as I said, if you’ve got endless access to cash then why not buy the latest coolest looking device. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Personally, this is the only time I would recommend spending so much on a laptop.

Most of us, however, would not really need to spend so much money. It’s unlikely you’ll ever take advantage of everything a device costing this much offers. Although Chrome OS has advanced there is only so much you can do.

For example, you can’t play cutting edge games locally. The most intensive tasks you’ll most likely do on a Chrome OS device is image or video editing. Even then, Chrome OS is still unable to offer true video editing.

The build quality of a device is obviously important, but can that build quality really come with such a price tag? The processor, RAM and storage are all important, but anything over an i5 is overkill. You don’t need it.

This is the same as the display. Any laptop with a display under 15-inches works perfectly fine with 1,920 by 1,080. Do you really need anything more than this when you consider what you’ll be doing on your laptop? 4K might sound nice, but for most of us, it’s a waste of money.

Low budget Chromebooks are still a great deal for many. If you’re after a computer to surf the internet and not much else. Then a low budget device is definitely where you should be looking.

When looking at buying a budget Chromebook you need to look out for build and display quality. There are some great budget Chromebooks that offer a lot.

However, you’ll also find some that are poorly built or have disappointing displays. So you need to do your homework before buying. A great budget Chromebook is the Acer CB514-1HT. This device is well built and comes with an excellent HD touchscreen.

This is where I think you’ll get the best value for money. When we consider mid-range we are looking at devices costing from £350/$350 to £650/$650.

Most devices in the mid-range offer great build quality, an excellent display and enough processing power for most needs.

As soon as you start looking at a device that is over £650/$650 then you need to think about what you’re paying for. What are you being offered for the extra money?

For me, the best mid-range Chromebook at the moment is the Pixelbook. However, this is at the higher price range, so it may not be suitable for everyone.

It’s great that we are now seeing more Chromebook devices being released. However, all this extra choice does make it more confusing when choosing your next device.

Most of the best devices available fall into the mid-range. If you’re spending more than this, then you need to make sure it’s because the device offers something more.

This doesn’t necessarily mean if it offers 4K then it’s worth the extra money. Can you really see the value of 4K on a 14-inch display? I don’t think you can, not for the extra cost involved.

It all comes down to personal choice. If you’re after a good laptop at a decent price. You’ll find plenty to choose from without having to spend a fortune.
