Acer 315 Chromebook Intel Celeron N4000 specification review

Acer makes some great Chromebooks and their budget range is no exception. If you're on the lookout for a new Chromebook with a large 15.6-inch display you might have your eyes on the Acer 315 Chromebook.

Before buying a new laptop it's always a good idea to check whether it will be suitable for you. This article will look at everything you need to know about the Acer 315 Chromebook, so you can find out whether this is the laptop for you.

Build Quality

The Acer CB315 is a nice-looking laptop with a silver finish. It's an all-over plastic body, which is just what you'd expect from a budget device. This isn't anything to be concerned about because a plastic chassis usually means a lighter laptop. The fact this laptop comes with such a large display you'd want to keep the weight down.

It's a laptop-only device and not a Hybrid. A Hybrid is when you can use the device as either a laptop or a tablet. Although Hybrid devices can be good in certain situations, I don't think they are necessary for most users. Also, personally, I'm not a huge fan of Hybrids because they are pretty impractical to use in tablet mode. Especially when you consider the size of the display on this specific model.

I own a 15.6-inch Chromebook and they can be great for using large spreadsheets or playing games. Another benefit is that they usually come with a separate number pad, just like you get with the Acer CB315. This is an excellent extra, which is great for number crunching on spreadsheets and is something you don't see on smaller laptops.

Acer 315 Performance

It's a budget Chromebook, so you shouldn't expect lightning-fast performance. That being said, Chrome OS is an extremely lightweight operating system, so you don't need a lot of power to get things done.

It comes with an Intel Celeron N400 dual-core processor, which has a base speed of 1.10 GHz and a turbo speed of 2.60 GHz. The 4MB cache will help speed up regular processes that you perform, which will help with performance.

This processor will easily be able to handle daily tasks such as internet surfing, word processing, spreadsheets and social media. You should not come across too many issues with performance for basic tasks. Android apps should also work fine, but you may find more advanced apps load slower.

The 4GB of RAM is more than enough to carry out all of the tasks I've mentioned above. When you consider the Intel Celeron processor used the 4GB of RAM is more than enough. If you've never owned a Chromebook before you may think the storage at 32GB is really small. It's true that 32GB is the least amount of storage you'd find on a Chromebook. However, Chromebooks do not need the same amount of storage as a Windows laptop. This is because you don't install programs locally, as most of the tasks you carry out are done online.

I did a test on a Chromebook I own that has 32GB of storage, and I was pretty amazed at how much I could install. Storage on a Chromebook is generally reserved for Android apps because these are stored locally. I was able to install plenty of Android apps, download a whole Netflix series and still had space left over. Therefore, you can actually install a lot on a Chromebook with 32 GB of storage.

Acer 315 Display

The display is one of the largest you'll find on a Chromebook. At 15.6-inches it's possibly not going to be suitable for everyone. If you're looking for a compact laptop that is easy to carry around then this may not be the one for you.

If you're looking for a laptop with a large display then this is definitely one to consider. The only thing I would point out is the resolution. It's really strange that Acer has decided to use SD resolution on such a large display. Generally speaking, I would not recommend SD resolution on any display that is 14-inches or over.

This is because the text and images will appear much bigger on the display, and this isn't going to be suitable for everyone. Also, such a large display that uses a resolution of 1,366 x 768 will mean the text won't be that crisp.

On the other hand. If you struggle to read text on a laptop screen. Then you may prefer a larger display with a lower resolution. You'll definitely be able to read text much easier on this display than if it had a higher resolution. It really depends on what you're looking for. This model does not support a touchscreen display. Acer 315 Chromebook connectivity

There is plenty of connectivity on the Acer 315 Chromebook. This is great to see because it means you shouldn't have any issues connecting with other peripherals. I also like the fact they've provided one of each type of USB port on either side, which makes it much easier connecting hardware without having to worry about where you are seated.

You'll find two older USB Type-A ports, which can be used to connect devices such as a USB stick, external hard disk or mouse. Two newer USB Type-C ports are also available, which is perfect if you have newer hardware to connect that needs to have a USB Type-C port. The type C port can also be used to connect an external display and to charge your Chromebook.

A microphone/headphone jack is provided, which is great if you want to use a pair of wired headphones or a wired mic. There is of course Bluetooth available if you'd prefer to connect a pair of wireless headphones.

The Micro SD slot available will make it easy to add further storage at a later date. Adding further storage is easy and cheap, as you can find SD Card storage at great prices.

Is this Chromebook for you and where to buy it?

If you're looking for a cheap laptop with a large 15.6-inch display and most likely carrying out basic tasks most of the time. Then the Acer 315 might be a good choice.

The only thing you really need to consider is the display resolution. Considering the size of the display the SD resolution may not be suitable for everyone. That being said, if you'd prefer much larger text, which is easier to read, then you may prefer the display resolution this Chromebook comes with.

A laptop with a 15-inch display isn't going to be for everyone. Mainly because they can be much harder to carry around with you. If you'll be using the laptop mainly on a desk then this shouldn't cause you any issues.
