Best 14-inch budget Chromebooks to buy in the UK in 2022

If you’re looking to buy a brand new laptop then you have so many choices to choose from. If you’ve decided a Chromebook is the one for you, then you’ve made a great choice. You may find all the options you have a little overwhelming, which is understandable because all retailers may offer slightly different configurations of the same Chromebook.

Therefore, you can’t just read an online review for a particular Chromebook and decide from that whether it’s right for you or not. A good example of this is the Acer 314 Chromebook. Most reviews for this laptop state it’s let down by the display. The reason for this is because a lot of manufacturers are selling the older model. The newer model has a better processor and the display has been given a major upgrade.

This is why I’ve created this list of the best 14-inch budget Chromebooks you can buy in the UK. I’ll explain why they’ve made it in the list and where you can buy them from. Remember one thing, not all manufacturers sell the same model, so you’ve got to do your research to get the best laptop. I’ve done all the research for you, and the list below is the best budget 14-inch Chromebooks you can currently buy in the UK.

Acer 314 14-inch Chromebook

Acer 314 Chromebook

The Acer 314 has just got an upgrade, but many retailers are still showing listings for the older model. At the time of writing this article, the only retailer selling the new and improved model is Argos. The new model offers a Full HD display with an IPS panel compared to the older model with SD resolution and a TN panel. Also, the processor has been upgraded from an Intel Celeron to an Intel Pentium. These updates have made this one of the best budget Chromebooks you can buy in the UK.

To make it even better is the fact you can get your hands on this at a crazily cheap price. At the time of writing the Acer 314 Chromebook is available from Argos for just £209.99. They also have an offer at the moment where you get a pair of Acer headphones included. Now that’s a bargain!

It comes with an Intel Pentium quad-core processor with a base speed of 1.1 GHz and a turbo speed of 2.7 GHz. Because it has four cores you’ll get fantastic performance from this Chromebook. You’ll be able to do most tasks with this laptop. This includes internet surfing, word processing, spreadsheets, Android Apps, social media and streaming movies in HD with apps like NetFlix.

It has 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for most of us. You can still get decent performance and get most things done with this amount of RAM. If you’re unsure whether you need more RAM than this. Have a read of how much RAM do I need for my Chromebook.

It comes with 64GB of storage, which is ample for a budget device. You’ll easily be able to install plenty of Android apps with the 64 GB of storage you get with the Acer 314.

Acer 314 display

The new Acer 314 has not just received a performance upgrade. The display offered from the newer model is a great improvement. This is because you’re now getting a 14-inch display with a Full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080. This means you’ll be able to watch Full HD movies rather than watching them in SD, which is what the older model offered.

The panel has also been given an upgrade. Unlike the older model, which used a TN panel. The new Acer 314 Chromebook comes with an IPS panel. An IPS panel offers a much better display, which you’ll definitely notice if you’ve not owned a laptop with an IPS panel previously. It makes everything look more realistic and the colours are vivid. You also get much better viewing angles with an IPS panel, so you don’t need to be sitting directly in front of your laptop to get a decent view of what is showing on the display.

Acer has not cut any corners when it comes to the new Acer 314 Chromebook. This is great to see because it also means you get great connectivity. Two older USB ports and two newer USB Type C ports are available. This is excellent because it means you can connect older hardware without having to worry about compatibility issues. The newer USB Type C will mean any new hardware you buy that supports USB C only will also be usable on the Acer 314.

A microphone/headphone jack is also available, which means you can connect a pair of wired headphones or a microphone. You can also use a wireless pair of headphones thanks to the Bluetooth connectivity that is offered. On top of all this, it comes with a Micro SD slot. The Micro SD slot makes it easy to add further storage to your Chromebook at a later date.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3

Lenovo Ideapad 3 Chromebook

Lenovo is a relative newcomer to the Chromebook. They haven’t let that stop them from making some great Chrome OS devices. One of the advantages of Lenovo is that they offer their laptops at really competitive prices. This means you can get your hands on a new Chromebook without having to spend a fortune.

The IdeaPad 3 is currently available from Argos for just £249.99, but at the time of writing, you’ll find it cheaper at Currys at just £219.00. Currently offered by Currys for £30 off the normal retail price. Therefore, both retailers sell this Chromebook at the same price if they don’t have any deals available.

It comes with a MediaTek processor with a base speed of 2GHz. Although this is an Octa-Core processor, this does not mean it will necessarily be more powerful than the processor that you get with the Acer 314. In fact, on the performance front, the Acer 314 will offer better all-round performance. That being said, the IdeaPad 3 offers all the performance you need for regular tasks you’ll carry out on a laptop.

It comes with the same amount of RAM and storage, and the 14-inch display offers a Full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080. The display uses a TN panel, which means it will not match the true to life imagery the Acer 314 will provide. However, it does have a touchscreen display, which the 314 doesn’t come with. Therefore, you’ll have to decide whether a touchscreen is more important than an IPS panel.

Asus C433 Chromebook

Asus C433 Chromebook

The Asus C433 is definitely one of the best budget Chromebooks you can buy. The reason for this is that it was originally launched to compete at the bottom level of mid-range devices. However, it was never going to work in that category because there was far too much competition. That being said, you can get some higher-spec C433 models that now sit comfortably in the medium-spec range.

This meant Asus reduced the price of this particular model and you can now get your hands on the Asus C433 from Argos for just £299.99. Because it was originally launched as a medium-spec device you’re getting your hands on a laptop that is high performing and has the looks to match.

It comes with an Intel M3 processor with a base speed of 1.1GHz and a turbo speed of 3.4GHz. Making this Chromebook easily handle most of the tasks you’ll throw at it. Whether that is advanced Android Apps or spreadsheet work. The Asus C433 will cope just fine. The 4GB of RAM used is fine and is the same amount of RAM as all the other laptops on this list. It’s unlikely you’d find a budget Chromebook with more RAM. The storage at 64GB is more than enough to install plenty of Android apps.

The display is going to be decent, as you’d expect from Asus. The 14-inch screen comes with a Full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080. It also has an IPS panel and a touchscreen. This is the only model on this list that can also be used as a tablet, which is thanks to the Hybrid 2-in-1 hinge, which allows you to rotate the display.

These are the three budget 14-inch Chromebooks that I’d be considering if I was buying one. The Asus C433 offers the best all-around functionality. This is because it’s the only Chromebook on this list that can be used as both a laptop and a tablet. This also means it’s the only one, which comes with a touchscreen display.

If you’re looking for a laptop to take advantage of Android Apps. Then having a touchscreen is the better option. Although you can use most Android Apps without a touchscreen. Some apps are much better to use with a touchscreen.

The disadvantage of the Asus C433 compared to the Acer 314 is the AUE date. The Asus C433 receives updates until June 2026, which means you’ll receive vital security updates until that date. The Acer 314 receives updates until June 2028. Therefore, if you’re looking for a laptop, which you’ll get long term use from. The Acer 314 wins.
