Asus Chromebox 4 – A worthwhile upgrade to the Chromebox 3

I love my Asus Chromebox 3, which I use on a daily basis. I own a few Chromebooks, but I tend to do most things on my Chromebox. Because it’s a desktop PC I tend to be more productive when using my Chromebox. It has a permanent home on my desk, and I always end up doing much more when sitting at a desk.

It’s not just about work. When I play games I always use my Chromebox over my Chromebook. The main reason for this is because I’d rather sit at a desk for long periods. You can use a Chromebook anywhere, but you’re not necessarily sitting in a good position. This can put a strain on your body over time. Using my Chromebox at my desk encourages me to sit correctly.

The Chromebox allows you to use larger display monitors, which makes playing games fantastic. Another great benefit is most of them have an ethernet port. This is essential if playing games on Nvidia GeForce now or Stadia. You get a much better internet connection than you do over WiFi.

My Asus Chromebox 3

I bought my Asus Chromebox 3 about two years ago. I’ve been using it almost daily since then, and it has never let me down. At the moment it still has a few years of Chrome OS updates. This stops me from considering upgrading to the newer Asus Chromebox 4.

I’ve got the Intel i5 model with 8GB of RAM. It’s more than capable of coping with all the different tasks you’d want to carry out on your Chrome OS computer. This isn’t about to change any time soon.

Therefore, to upgrade to the Asus Chromebox 4 wouldn’t make much sense for me. However, if you don’t yet own a Chromebox. Choosing between either the Asus Chromebox 3 or Chromebox 4 is something you’ll need to consider.

Asus Chromebox 4 Chrome OS updates

The first thing I’ve noticed about the Asus 4 is that it looks a little different. It has slightly curved edges, which gives it a slightly sexier look. The other main difference is the processor used. Like I’ve already said, the processor in the Asus 3 is more than capable. The main difference is you’re getting a tenth-generation processor rather than the eight-generation you get with the Chromebox 3.

This not only means it will have faster processing speeds. The main difference is that it will come with a later AUE date. All Chrome OS devices come with an Automatic Update Expiry (AUE) date. When this date is reached you’ll no longer receive automatic updates. These updates are really important to ensure you stay safe online. It also means your device will receive any improvements updates to Chrome OS.

The Asus Chromebox 3 receives updates until June 2025. The newer Asus 4 will receive updates until June 2028. Therefore, if you’re considering buying a new Chromebox. The difference in the AUE date may be a good enough reason to choose the newer model. That’s even before you look at any other differences between these two chromeboxes.

Asus Chromebox 4 has two HDMI ports

I’m glad to see Asus has provided two HDMI ports on their new Chromebox. This means you can easily connect two external displays. The Asus Chromebox 3 only has one HDMI port. To add a further display to the Asus Chromebox 3 you need to use the USB C port. This requires a further adapter.

This means you can add three displays to the Asus Chromebox 4. You can use the two HDMI ports for two displays. You can then add a further display using the Type C port. This may be a little overkill, but it’s good to have the option.

Asus Chromebox 4 or 3

If you’re considering an Asus Chromebox and unsure which one to choose. I hope I’ve explained the main differences. Of course, the Asus 4 will come with better performance and later versions of WiFi and Bluetooth. However, I think the main difference is that it receives updates for a further three years.

Being able to connect two monitors via HDMI rather than USB Type C is also a great improvement. This means you can use the Type C port for other things.

I guess the only other thing you need to consider is the price. The Chromebox 3 will cost a lot less than the Asus 4. Therefore, you’ll need to weigh up what is more important. Saving money or choosing a computer that will receive updates for a longer time.
