Acer R13 Chromebook review

The Acer R13 Chromebook is a great budget Chromebook. If you’re looking for a budget Chromebook that is highly portable then continue reading this Chromebook review.

Other Chromebooks with a similar spec include the HP 14 G5 Chromebook and the Acer 14 Chromebook.

The Acer R13s outer shell is aluminum, which gives the R13 a premium feel when closed. When you open the Chromebook you’re met with a plastic finish inside. This is a slight letdown because it removes the premium quality feel you get from the outside of the device.

It weighs 1.49kg, which isn’t the lightest Chromebook around but it certainly isn’t too heavy to take out and about with you. It’s just 15mm thick, which is pretty slim compared to most of the Chromebooks available.

The plastic where you rest your palms when typing is not as solid as you may expect. This does make you wonder whether the R13 would be able to take a few bumps when out and about. However, that being said, the build quality isn’t too much to be worried about and you need to remember this is a budget Chromebook, so you always need to compromise in places.

You’ll be happy to know the Acer R13 is a Hybrid Chromebook, which means you can use it as either a laptop or tablet. The 360 degrees hinge allows you to easily swap from laptop to tablet. This is a great addition for when you want to use Android Apps in tablet mode.

The keyboard is ok to use. It definitely isn’t the best but you can type on the Acer R13 comfortably. It may not be ideal for someone who types all day though. For that, you would need to look elsewhere, like the Asus C302 that has a fantastic keyboard.

The processor you get with the Acer R13 is a MediaTek MT81743. This is not a commonly used processor on Chromebook devices, so you’d be forgiven if you’ve never come across it before.

It’s a dual-core processor capable of speeds of up to 2.10 GHz and performs similar to the Intel Celeron processors you see in most of the budget Chromebooks available.

Performance is something you always need to make a sacrifice on when buying a budget Chromebook. You cannot expect too much from the processor in this price range. However, the Acer R13 is still more than capable of day to day tasks such as internet surfing, word processing and running many of the Android Apps that are available from the play store.

You’ll only notice an issue with the processor when it comes to trying to multitask or use more processor hungry applications. If you need a Chromebook with more processing power than this, then take a look at the top ten high spec Chromebooks to buy in 2019.

The amount of RAM and storage available is pretty decent. The Acer R13 comes with 4GB of RAM, which will be more than enough for most of the tasks you would expect to use on the R13.

You’ll comfortably be able to use most of the Android Apps that are currently available without any problem. When it comes to performance, it would be the processor that would struggle before you got to a situation where your Chromebook had run out of RAM to do its job correctly.

As for the storage at 64GB, this is more than enough for installing plenty of Android Apps. It also means you’ll have plenty of storage leftover if you like to keep files that you’ve downloaded stored locally. However, you should be taking advantage of the Chromebooks ability to work seamlessly with Google Drive, which allows you to dramatically cut down the number of files you need to store on your local storage.

A lot of budget Chromebooks offer a poor experience when it comes to the display. You’ll be happy to know that isn’t the case here. The display on the R13 is excellent for the price and there are only a number of budget Chromebooks that can offer such specs.

It comes with a 13.3-inch display that offers true HD resolution at 1,920 by 1,080. This is really noticeable whether you’re using it as a laptop or tablet. It also comes with an IPS panel, which means you get super crisp images and vibrant colours from the Acer R13.

The IPS panel also means whatever is being displayed on the screen looks great from any viewing angle. This is perfect for anyone wanting to share a movie with a friend on a long train or plane journey.

I mentioned earlier that the Acer R13 makes a great traveling companion. Apart from the compact size and relatively lightweight. The best thing here is the battery life. Acer claims it can last up to 12 hours on a single charge, which is more than enough to get you through a whole day without charging.

In reality, especially if viewing movies in Full HD. You can expect to get at least 9 hours, which is still pretty impressive and is something that I needed to mention.

The R13 comes with all the connectivity you would expect from a budget Chromebook and more. It has both USB 3.1 and Type-C connections, which means you’ll easily be able to connect other hardware to the device.

It also comes with a Micro SD slot, so you can easily add further storage down the line should you need to. This makes the Acer R13 pretty future proof when it comes to connectivity. This is really good to see in a budget Chromebook.

Acer R13 full chromebook review

If you’re looking for a budget Chromebook that is ideal for using on the move then the Acer R13 is definitely one to consider. It has an excellent battery life and amazing display for a Chromebook in this price range.

The true HD 1,920 x 1,080 display with IPS technology makes it one of the best displays available when compared to other Chromebooks with displays under 14-inches.

Yes, it’s true, it’s not blazing fast when it comes to performance. However, this is the same with all budget Chromebooks that are currently available.

If you want a great mobile device that can be used as a laptop or tablet. Then you may want to consider the Acer R13 Chromebook.

  1. The sleek design and the fact that it is extremely light weight is a good bonus point for a machine in this price range. The device is powered by MediaTek chipset at its core which ensure steady, fast and smooth performance at all times without any latency. The fact that R13 Chromebook runs Android apps is a bonus cookie for all.
