If you’ve used a Chromebook you’ll know you spend a lot of your time using the browser. This is because Chrome OS takes full advantage of computing in the cloud. This means you’ll use a lot of programs directly from your browser. The default browser on your Chromebook is Chrome, which makes sense, as Chrome OS is a Google operating system. The Chrome browser is also a Google-powered browser, so the Chrome browser being used by default is a perfect match.

You can’t really use another browser on your Chromebook. This is not the same if you’re used to using a Windows PC where you can choose the browser you prefer to work with. You can of course choose your search engine, so you don’t need to use Google as default. To find out how to do this you can watch my video on how to change your default search engine on your Chromebook.

There is now an option on your Chromebook to change your browser. Instead of using Chrome, you can now use Opera on your Chrome OS computer. Whether this is really necessary is a question I’ve been asking. The Chrome browser is the most popular browser in the world. It offers cutting-edge technology and regularly receives updates to keep you safe when surfing online. Let’s take a closer look at how you can use the Opera browser on your Chromebook or Chromebox.

Using the Opera Browser on your Chromebook

It’s important to know that you cannot change your default browser. This is because the Chrome browser is built into the Chrome OS operating system. To use Opera you would need to do this via an Android App. Yes, the Opera browser on your Chromebook is only possible if you download their app from the play store.

I can’t really understand why you would want to do this and what the benefit would be. Apart from some extra features, which don’t provide enough for me to use the Opera browser over the Chrome browser. The only feature people may be interested in is the VPN. A VPN or Virtual Private Network allows you to surf the internet anonymously. This may sound ideal for anyone who is concerned about their data.

However, I’ve never really understood why you would need to use a VPN. A VPN makes it impossible for anyone to identify you when surfing the internet. It does this by routing all internet traffic around the world. This means a website you visit would not be able to identify where you’re located. If you lived in the USA the VPN may show you’re based in Thailand. Again, unless you’re up to something you should not be doing. I’m not really sure why this is something you would need. Another big issue with using a VPN is that it slows down your internet connection.

I’ll be sticking with the Chrome Browser

If you want to check out the Opera browser you’ll need to download the Android App. I’ve used it briefly, but I’ll definitely not be switching to Opera on a long-term basis. Firstly, as I’ve already mentioned, you cannot change the default browser. So you’re essentially having to run an app to run a browser. I can’t see why you would want to do this when you can use the Chrome browser directly from your desktop.

The only real benefit is having access to a free VPN, but this isn’t really something the majority of us need to worry about. Surfing the internet using a VPN slows down your internet connection far too much. I think this is another desperate act from Opera to try and get people to move to their browser. Something they’ve been trying for over twenty years.
