Stadia now makes it possible to play games on your Chromebook

One of the issues that some people have when considering a Chromebook is the lack of gaming. This was something some people could simply not get over. However, you no longer need to worry, as you can now play games on your Chromebook by using Stadia.

I must admit before Stadia the issues around gaming on the Chromebook did concern me a little. Not for me personally because I’ve always accepted I needed an extra computer to play games.

I was more concerned about not being able to play games impacting the Chromebook. It felt like we were a long way off the Chromebook being capable of playing advanced games with intense graphics. However, Google has come to the rescue with Stadia, so let’s take a look at what Stadia is and how it works.

WHY STADIA IS PERFECT FOR CHROMEBOOK

Stadia is a relatively new service from Google, which allows you to play console-style games on many different devices. Yes, that’s right, it’s not just something you can use on your Chromebook.

However, although it can be played on many different devices it’s also perfect to use on your Chromebook laptop. This is because it’s a cloud-based service, which we all know is perfect for a cloud-based system like Chrome OS.

Cloud computing has come a long way compared to when Chromebooks were originally launched. It’s rather ironic to think that the Chromebook being a cloud computer was one of the issues many people had when it was launched in 2011.

Fast forward to 2020 and cloud computing is what makes the Chromebook so desirable. In fact, all other operating systems are now taking the cloud very seriously.

Because Stadia is cloud-based means you don’t need to worry about having all the necessary hardware on your Chrome OS device.

LOCAL GAMING ON A CHROMEBOOK

There are still some waiting for gaming to be available for the Chromebook locally. For example, there are rumours that Steam and Google are working together to create a Steam app on Linux for Chrome OS.

This is obviously great news but I’m not convinced this will ever really happen with the current Chromebooks we have come to love. Even if Google and Steam did manage to create a great Steam app. We’d still have to deal with the hardware that would be needed.

At the moment even the most advanced Chromebook devices do not have the necessary internals to play a lot of games. Any game that uses a lot of advanced graphics needs an independent Graphics card.

There is currently no Chromebook that comes with a separate Graphics card. If we started to see this we’d have to see a big change in Chrome OS and the cost of Chromebook devices would dramatically increase in price.

So although, I’m not giving up on local gaming. I think we may be a long way off with a lot of hurdles to overcome first.

STADIA CAN BE USED ON MOST CHROMEBOOK DEVICES

This is why Stadia is perfect for the Chromebook. You can play games that you could only have previously played on a console without any issues.

All of the processing takes place in the cloud. Stadia uses advanced servers owned by Google to do all the processing needed. This means you don’t need to worry about your Chromebook needing to have a really expensive processor to play games on Stadia.

When it comes to your Chromebook the only hardware you need is what you already have available. That’s your keyboard, trackpad and of course your display.

So although you can play Stadia on most Chromebooks. You’ll get the best experience if using a Chrome OS device that comes with a decent display, which can handle true HD of 1,920 by 1,080.

If you are lucky enough to own a Chromebook that comes with a 4K display. Then you’ll be happy to know that Stadia is also capable of processing games in 4K.

TYPE OF GAMES AVAILABLE

This is the only issue I have with Stadia. Most of the games are what you’d generally see on a console such as the X Box or PS4. I own a PS4 but rarely use it because I’m not a huge fan of the type of games you get on a console.

I’m much more into games that are available on the PC such as simulations. These type of games rarely make it to the console and if they do they are usually poor compared to the PC version.

However, if you do prefer console-style games then having Stadia available to play games on the Chromebook is great news.

Also, because you can use a keyboard and trackpad. We may see PC simulation style games come to Stadia in the future.

CONCLUSION

We’ve been waiting for games for our Chromebooks for many years now. So it’s great to see this is now becoming a reality.

It makes perfect sense for the Chromebook to take advantage of what it’s great at, which is cloud computing. So why not use the same cloud technology for gaming.

Stadia is still growing, so there is not yet a huge amount of games available. I’m sure this will change in the future. The great news is that you’ll no longer have to deal with people saying Chromebooks are not capable of true gaming.
