Samsung is well known for making top quality tech. This is also true when it comes to Chromebooks where they’ve long been established in the USA. If you live in the UK you’ll notice Samsung Chromebooks have only started to be seen in the shops and online. This is because Samsung did stop making laptops in the UK and Europe. Thankfully, they reversed this decision in 2020.

The Samsung 4 11.6-inch Platinum Titan Chromebook is a budget laptop. This is great for anyone who wants a laptop without spending too much money. The great thing about Chrome OS, which is the operating system for the Chromebook. Is that its extremely lightweight, which means you can carry out a lot of tasks even with a low spec processor.

Samsung 4 Build Quality

Most budget Chromebooks come with a plastic body. This isn’t something you should be too concerned about because at the price you can’t really expect much else. The Samsung 4 has a plastic body, but the lid is aluminium. This is a good move by Samsung because it gives this laptop a slightly more premium feel than some other budget laptops.

They’ve gone with the somewhat traditional silver colour, which isn’t going to turn any heads. That being said, it does look pretty good and very compact. If you’re looking for a laptop to use on the move then you’ll be happy with how small this laptop is. This is helped by the 11.6-inch display that is used and it only weighs 2.6lbs / 1.18kg.

The Samsung 4 Chromebook is a nice looking laptop

It’s a laptop only device, which means it doesn’t come with the Hybrid feature that you find with some Chrome OS computers. A Hybrid can have the lid turn all the way around, so it can be used as a laptop or a tablet. Personally speaking, this not being a Hybrid isn’t the end of the world. They are good, but I’ve never really found them too practical on most Chromebooks.

The Performance

The Samsung 4 Chromebook uses an Intel Celeron processor. This type of processor is exactly what you’d expect to see when buying a budget laptop. As I’ve already mentioned, you don’t need to be too concerned about this, as Chrome OS is lightweight enough to work with budget spec laptops. It’s an Intel Celeron dual-core processor with a base speed of 1.7 GHz and a turbo speed of 2.6 GHz.

It comes with 4 GB of RAM and for the type of tasks you’d carry out on this laptop that’s absolutely fine. If you’re looking for a laptop to surf the internet, use social media, stream movies then this laptop is capable of doing all of that. Using a word processor or spreadsheet program is also going to perform just fine.

When it comes to speed. You’ll find that you can surf the internet without any issues. It all comes down to not opening too many windows all at once. A few windows will be absolutely fine, but if you have too many open. Then you will notice the performance will start to deteriorate. You’ll have no issues streaming videos on YouTube or Netflix. Making it a perfect all-rounder at a great price.

Samsung Chromebook storage

The amount of storage you get on a Chromebook can be important. It all depends on what you’ll be using your laptop for. The Chromebook is a cloud computer, which means you should save most of your files in the cloud. To use a Chromebook you need a Google Account, which comes with 15 GB of cloud storage for free. This means you don’t need to pay for storing your files in the cloud instead of locally.

This leaves your local storage for things you cannot store in the cloud, which is Android Apps. If you’re intending on installing plenty of Android apps then you may struggle with the 32 GB of storage. You can install quite a few Android apps with 32 GB. However, if you want to install a lot of Android apps including games that take up space. You may find that you run out of local storage.

If you are not going to install too many Android Apps. Then the 32 GB is fine. Don’t get me wrong it’s the smallest amount of local storage I’d consider. The thing is you’re buying a budget Chromebook, so you can’t expect too much when it comes to the specs. Internet surfers and social media users will be fine with the storage on offer.

The Samung Display

It’s a compact laptop that is perfect to use on the move. This is helped by the 11.6-inch display. When it comes to buying a budget laptop there is usually always something that you need to compromise on. Although the display is perfectly fine to use. You should not expect to be blown away by it. This is because it uses a TN panel. To use this laptop you’ll need to make sure you’re sitting right in front of it. If you view the display from an angle you’ll notice it’s harder to read.

If the quality of the display is really important to you. Then I would not necessarily recommend this laptop. You would be better off buying a Chromebook with an IPS panel. An IPS panel provides good viewing angles and colours are more vibrant.

Considering the size of the display the resolution used is perfectly fine. It uses the standard definition of 1,366 by 768. This means you’re not getting Full HD. The reason I say this is fine is that you would not find a laptop at this price with a display of 11.6-inches with Full HD. The Samsung 4 does not come with a touchscreen. If you like to use Android apps where a touchscreen is needed. Then you should look elsewhere.

Samsung 4 Chromebook Connectivity

The connectivity options available when buying a new laptop is something a lot of people overlook. Having decent connectivity is important, and the Samsung 4 will not let you down. It comes with one older USB A port and 1 USB C port. This means you’ll be able to use old or new peripherals without any issues, which is good to see. A USB C port, which is the newer type of USB can also be used to charge your laptop or connect an external display. This makes it a much better choice than USB A.

You’ll also find a Micro SD slot on the Samsung 4 Chromebook. This slot means you can easily add further storage at a later date. Adding further storage using an SD Card is a cheap way of upgrading your Chromebook storage. One thing you need to remember is you cannot install Android Apps on SD storage.

If you’re still using wired headphones you’ll be fine because it also comes with a headphone jack. If you’ve upgraded to Bluetooth headphones you’ll be fine thanks to the Bluetooth connectivity available on this laptop.

Is this Chromebook for you?

Whether the Samsung 4 Chromebook is suitable depends on what you need. If you’re looking for a cheap laptop for the majority of tasks we do on a computer then you’ll be fine. This includes social media, internet shopping, streaming movies and using Android Apps. You may find some advanced Android apps load slower than they would on a higher-performing Chromebook. Also, you need to remember this laptop does not come with a touchscreen, so not all Android apps may work as you would expect.

The display isn’t great, which is something you need to be aware of. That being said, it’s still going to be useable and the battery life of this laptop is fantastic. At over 12 hours, you’ll be able to use this laptop all day without having to charge it. For the price, it’s a decent laptop, and it looks pretty cool as well.
