Over the last few months, I’ve been writing a few blogs and posting plenty of videos about Microsoft 365. The main reason is to highlight that Chromebook users are not limited to using Google Docs for productivity. Don’t get me wrong Google Docs is great and is integrated into ChromeOS, which makes using it seamless.
That being said, there are still going to be plenty of people who may prefer to use Microsoft Office. You’ll also have people who need to use MS Office for work or studying, so having access to Office is a necessity rather than just a nice-to-have. You’ve been able to use MS Office on your Chromebook for a few years now, but it has only recently got to a stage where it works well enough to take it seriously.
In fact, Microsoft 365 now works great on the Chromebook. This is good to see because one of the main reasons people were put off buying a Chromebook was because they did not have access to MS Office.
Using Microsoft 365 for free on your Chromebook
You can use MS 365 for free on your Chromebook or any other type of computer for that matter. This works fine but you’re limited in what you can do. It’s great there is a free option but the paid subscription offers excellent value and opens up 365 to the whole family.
You can pay for a single subscription, which is going to work just fine if you don’t have any family to share it with. However, if you do have others in your household I would strongly consider choosing the Microsoft 365 Family Plan. Also, the single plan costs $6.99/£5.99 per month, but you can upgrade to the Family plan for just $8.99/£7.99 per month.
There are plenty of reasons why the Family plan is a great idea. Even if your whole family uses the same type of computer it makes sense to upgrade to the Family Plan. If you live in a household where someone uses a Chromebook and others use a PC or MAC then the family plan makes even more sense.
Microsoft 365 Family Plan
The main reason why I like Microsoft 365 is because it’s accessible in the cloud. This means you can get all your work done directly from a browser. This makes it perfect for anyone who uses a Chromebook, which was essentially created for cloud computing.
It also means anyone using another type of computer where they have access to a browser can use apps such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. You can also improve the experience by installing these apps as a PWA. Find out how to install an App as a PWA on your Chromebook.
One of the other great benefits of signing up for a paid subscription to Microsoft 365 is that you get access to the full versions of the MS Office apps. Therefore, if someone in your home owns a Windows PC they can download the full versions of the programs. ChromeOS users can also do this if their Chromebook is powerful enough to install Windows. It also gives you the ability to use Microsoft Access, which isn’t available online.
How the Family plan works
If you pay for a single subscription you will get access to the full MS Office programs and 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage. If you pay for a Family Plan you can invite 5 other members to get access to your subscription. Find out more at office.com.
Each person will get their very own Microsoft 365 access and the ability to download the full MS Office programs. They will also get access to their own OneDrive with 1TB of cloud storage for each user. This means if there are six of you in your household, you can all get access to full MS Office programs, MS Apps online and 1TB of cloud storage each.
This makes the Microsoft 365 Family Plan perfect for a family where everyone owns different devices and computers. It’s the way forward as far as I’m concerned because it removes the issue of having to worry about whether all the family can use the features. It removes the issue of having to think about compatibility issues.
If you have a large family where many different types of computers are used then the MS 365 Family Plan is a great option. Even if everyone uses a Chromebook it’s still worth considering the Family Plan subscription.
Once you’ve signed up for the Family Plan you can simply send an email to each member of your family to provide them access. Once you’ve done this they will all get their very own workspace, and your OneDrive files are kept private for each family member.
