If you’re looking for a new laptop and decided a Chromebook is the next computer for you. Then you may be interested in this deal where you can get your hands on a Lenovo Flex 5i IdeaPad Chromebook for just £429. That’s a massive saving of £120.
You can get the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook from Currys in the UK. Chromebooks have long been considered a cheap alternative to a Windows laptop, but that has changed a lot over the last couple of years.
The two main reasons for this are Chromebooks have improved dramatically from a couple of years back. Also, ChromeOS the operating system the Chromebook uses is far more advanced than it once was. You can do just about anything on ChromeOS that you can do on Microsoft Windows.
Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook
There are three ranges of Chromebooks starting with the budget, then medium and high-spec. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i comfortably sits in the medium range, which arguably offers everything you’ll ever need.
The great thing about medium-spec devices compared to budget Chromebooks is you shouldn’t have to make any compromises. Budget devices are great if you don’t want to spend too much money, but they are usually cheaply made and let down by the display quality. This isn’t the case for all budget devices, but generally speaking, that’s what you would find.
The Lenovo Flex 5i offers all the features you need to make the most of ChromeOS. This includes a powerful processor, plenty of RAM and storage, and a great display. It’s also a Hybrid, which means you can use it as either a laptop or a tablet. This also means it comes with a touchscreen display, which is perfect for using Android apps.
Flex 5i performance
ChromeOS is lightweight, which means you can do a lot with a Chromebook even if it comes with a budget processor. The good news is the Flex 5i comes with a high-powered Intel i5 eleventh-generation processor.
This means you’ll get blazingly fast performance when using the Lenovo Flex 5i. Whether you’ll be playing your favourite Android games or using your laptop for productivity. The processor is more than powerful enough to keep up with you.
This is a quad-core processor, so anything you throw at this Chromebook will be processed without the device even breaking into a sweat. It has a base speed of 1.6GHz with a whopping turbo boost speed of 4.2GHz. Find out more about the type of processor to look for when buying a Chromebook.
RAM & Storage
To make the most of the super-fast processor the IdeaPad Flex 5i comes with 8GB of RAM. This is more than enough and is the right amount of RAM for the processor used here.
You can get away with 4GB of RAM when using a Chromebook, but considering the high-powered processor used it makes sense to couple that with 8GB of RAM. Find out more about how much RAM you need for a Chromebook.
You don’t need to have as much storage on a Chromebook compared to a Windows PC. This is because you don’t install as many programs locally. The 256GB of storage you get with the IdeaPad 5i is more than enough and is perfect if you’ll be using Linux apps.
Linux Apps & Steam
About six months ago I bought the Asus CX5 Chromebook, which has almost identical specs to the Lenovo Flex 5i. Therefore, I know exactly the type of performance this computer is capable of.
It’s perfect if you want to use the more advanced features of ChromeOS such as Linux Apps. Linux Apps are a great way of adding extra functionality to your Chromebook, but they work much better with a high-powered laptop. If you already own a Chromebook find out how to install Linux.
You should even be able to install Steam Linux Alpha on this Chromebook, as the specs can definitely support it. However, I’d check on that first before making a purchase, as not all devices have yet been confirmed as compatible.
IdeaPad 5i Display
The display uses a Full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080, which means you’ll be able to watch Netflix and YouTube in Full HD. The perfect resolution for a laptop, and it will definitely not disappoint when it comes to the display quality.
Instead of a cheaper TN panel you usually find on cheaper laptops. The Lenovo Flex 5i uses an IPS panel, which means you will get much better viewing angles and images will be much more true-to-life. Have a look at this video to see the difference between a TN and IPS panel.
This is really important if you like good visuals, and is perfect for playing games. The display size of 13.3-inches also means this is a pretty compact laptop. You will love the display on offer here.
Would I buy this Chromebook?
If I was currently looking to buy a medium-spec Chromebook the IdeaPad 5i would definitely be on my list. At the reduced price of £429, it’s going to be a hard deal to beat. This isn’t a low-powered device, so you’re getting a lot of performance for your money.
An Intel i5 dual-core processor is pretty impressive, but this is a quad-core processor, so you’ll really notice the difference when it matters. The storage used is SSD, which is much better than the cheaper eMMC storage found in many laptops. You will notice this a lot if you use Linux Apps a lot on your ChromeOS computer.
The display is a perfect size and is a great allrounder. The typical 14-inch display you used to see on a laptop is a little big, but the 13.3-inches used here is perfect. Making this laptop perfect to use at home or when you’re out and about.
