Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Chromebook for just £219 – a huge saving of £80

If you like your laptops big then this 15.6-inch Lenovo Chromebook is a good choice. At the moment it’s available for just £219, which is £80 less than the recommended retail price. Getting your hands on a 15.6-inch Chromebook for just £219 is something that should not be overlooked.

This is a great all-rounder thanks to the Pentium Silver processor. A much better processor for faster performance than you would find with a budget processor such as Intel Celeron. This will make it perfect for doing almost all of the tasks you can think of with Chrome OS.

Due to the 15.6-inch display, this laptop isn’t going to be for everyone. I currently own the Asus CX5 Chromebook, which comes with the same size display. It’s great for playing games using Nvidia GeForce Now, but it can be very difficult to easily carry around with one hand due to the size.

Separate number pad

One of the advantages of a larger than normal display is the manufacturer has a lot more room to play with. When it comes to the keyboard this allows for a separate number pad, which is exactly what you’ll find with the Lenovo IdeaPad 3i.

A separate number pad is perfect if you need a laptop for a lot of spreadsheet work. If you need to input a lot of numbers having a separate number pad is essential.

You should be happy with the performance this laptop offers. As I’ve already mentioned the Intel Pentium Silver processor will easily handle most day-to-day tasks with ease. It comes with 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for most users. Find out more about how much RAM you need for your Chromebook.

Most of the tasks we perform on our laptops are possible with this device. This includes things like internet surfing, spreadsheets, word processing, social media, streaming movies, and using Android Apps. When you think about it, these are the types of tasks most of us carry out on a daily basis.

The storage should be fine for most at 64GB. This may not sound like a lot of storage if you’re used to using other types of computers. However, it’s worth pointing out you can do without as much storage with Chrome OS because you can save all of your files in the cloud. Your local storage should be reserved for installing Android Apps. You’ll easily be able to install all your favourite apps with 64GB.

It uses a TN panel

On this particular model, the display isn’t going to blow you away. This is because it comes with a TN panel rather than IPS. A TN panel is fine to use but it is nowhere near as good an experience compared to IPS.

The issue with TN panels is that nothing really stands out from the display. Everything appears a little dull, so nothing pops out of the screen at you. Also, viewing angles are not good at all, so trying to view a TN panel when you’re not sitting directly in front of it can be challenging.

This is something you should definitely consider before buying this Chromebook. If a good display is an important factor then this may not be the laptop for you. The best way to see the difference is to watch my video, which shows the difference between an IPS and TN panel.

The display does not come with a touchscreen, which may be an issue if you like to use plenty of Android Apps. Although you can use Chrome OS without a touchscreen some apps work better with one. It comes with Full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1080, which is what you’d expect considering the size of the display.

Should you buy this Chromebook

At first glance, it appears you’re getting a lot for your money, which is true if you look at the size of the display. The performance is pretty impressive considering the price of this laptop. It’s not usual to see a Pentium Silver at this price range.

That being said, there are some things that do let this Chromebook down. The main one is the TN panel that is used. If you’re not too worried about having an average-looking display then you may not be put off. However, if good visuals are important then I think you’ll be disappointed.
