HP 11.6-inch Chromebook Specification Review

If you’re looking for a cheap laptop then you can’t go wrong with a Chromebook. There are plenty of budget Chrome OS laptops to choose from. The HP 11.6-inch Chromebook is available at such a cheap price it’s hard not to be interested.

There are always some compromises you need to make when buying a cheap laptop. This isn’t necessarily an issue when you compare these with the price you’re paying. The key is to make sure any compromises are things you can live with. This specification review of the HP 11.6-inch Chromebook will help you decide whether this is the laptop for you.

Build Quality

When it comes to the build quality the exterior and interior are all made of plastic. This is certainly nothing to be concerned about. Nearly every budget Chromebook and even some medium-spec devices are plastic. The good thing about plastic is that it makes the laptop much lighter than if it were aluminium. This particular laptop weighs in at just 2.99lbs/1.36kg, which is pretty light. Making it perfect to use on the move.

Curved edges make it comfortable to hold

It’s a laptop only device, which means the lid cannot rotate 360 degrees and be used as a tablet. I wouldn’t be put off by that at the price, and not everyone is interested in having a 2-in-1 device. It’s a neat looking laptop and the light grey chassis looks really smart. What I also like is the edges of the laptop are nice and round. This will make handling the laptop really comfortable, which is really important if you’re looking for a laptop to use on the move.

HP 11.6-inch Chromebook Performance

The processor used is an Intel Celeron dual-core processor. Most budget laptops use the Intel Celeron chip, which helps to keep the price of the laptop down. The good news is Intel Celeron works just fine with Chrome OS. Because Chrome OS is lightweight, you can buy a laptop with relatively low specs and still get decent performance.

The base speed is 1.1 GHz and it’s capable of a turbo boost speed of 2.4 GHz. Pretty fast for doing the majority of tasks you’ll want to do with this laptop. It comes with 4 GB of RAM, which is more than enough for a budget Chromebook. Also, with the processor used here having more than 4 GB of RAM would be pointless. Find out more about the RAM needed for a Chromebook.

This is perfect for anyone looking for a laptop to surf the internet or use social media. You’ll also be able to stream movies and use a word processor or spreadsheet program without any issues.

The Storage

The amount of storage you get on a Chromebook is typically much lower than you would get with an MS Windows laptop. This is because you can do most things in the cloud. This is one of the great advantages of a Chrome OS laptop. The HP 11.6-inch comes with 32 GB of eMMC storage. eMMC storage is what you’d expect to see on a budget Chromebook and it works perfectly fine. It’s much better than a computer that uses a moving hard disk, which can be loud and are prone to damage much easier.

When you consider you can store most files in the cloud on a Chromebook. You only need to think about how many Android apps you may want to install. This is the only thing that needs to use local storage. You can store files locally, but if you store all of your other files in the cloud. Then you shouldn’t have too much of an issue.

You’ll not be able to install hundreds of apps. However, you should easily be able to install about 10 to 15 apps without any issues. This does depend on the type of apps you install though because they vary in size.

HP 11.6-inch Chromebook Display

The display used here is 11.6-inches. You get a lot of budget Chromebooks offering this display size. I own a budget Chromebook with an 11.6-inch display and it’s perfect to take out and about with you. It takes up very little space and it means the laptop is nice and compact. Something you can easily pop in your bag and forget about it.

The resolution is Standard Resolution. This is absolutely fine and you should not expect HD resolution from an 11.6-inch budget Chromebook. If you did want a laptop with a display of this size that comes with Full HD resolution. Then you’d be paying a lot more than this laptop costs. Also, the SD resolution of 1,366 by 768 works perfectly fine on a display of this size.

The TN panel offers average viewing angles

The panel used is a TN panel. I don’t necessarily love TN panels, but they are still fine to use on a daily basis. My Acer 311 has a TN panel, and I can easily use it throughout the day. Just don’t expect to be blown away by the display quality. If you want to own a laptop with a fantastic display. Then you should be looking for a laptop with an IPS panel.

However, it’s important to note you wouldn’t get a laptop with an IPS panel in this price range. You can watch my YouTube video where I show the difference between a TN and IPS panel if you’re unsure about this.

Connectivity

It’s important to make sure any laptop that you buy has all the connectivity you need. The HP 11.6-inch Chromebook is pretty good when it comes to connectivity. Not only do you get two older type USB A ports. You’ll also find two newer type USB Type C ports. This means you’ll have no issues using older peripherals or newer hardware, which only supports USB Type C.

Type C is the latest USB port available. They’re great because you can also use these ports to charge your laptop or connect an external display. I really like the fact that you get both a USB A and C port on either side of this laptop. This makes it much easier to connect devices without worrying about where your plug outlet or hardware you want to connect are located.

You’ll also find a Micro SD slot. You can use this slot to add extra storage at a later date. The good thing about SD storage is that you can buy SD cards for a really cheap price. This makes it a good option to expand the storage without having to spend a fortune. A Microphone/headphone jack is also available. This laptop will definitely not let you down when it comes to connectivity.

Automatic Update Expiry (AUE) date

All ChromeOS computers receive updates on a monthly basis. These updates bring new functionality to your Chromebook or Chromebox. Apart from offering some great new features with every update; these updates also ensure you’re safe when surfing online.

This is one of the reasons why ChromeOS computers are much safer than computers running on a different operating system. To continually improve ChromeOS and take advantage of the new technology found in the latest Chromebooks; all ChromeOS computers come with an AUE date. Once this date is reached your Chromebook will no longer receive automatic updates. Find out more about the AUE date and check the AUE date for any ChromeOS computer.

Is this Chromebook for you

If you’re looking for a cheap laptop and the main purpose is for internet surfing, social media, streaming movies, word processing and spreadsheet work. Then you’ll easily be able to do all these things with this laptop. It’s the perfect laptop if you need something small so you can use it way from home.

The performance is going to offer everything you need for these types of tasks. Sure, it would have been nice to see an IPS panel, which offers a better display quality. However, you need to be realistic and look at how much this laptop costs. For the price there really isn’t anything that you can complain about.
