If you are not already aware Chrome OS devices currently have an Auto-update expiry date. More commonly referred to as the AUE date. To ensure Chrome OS stays lightweight and is easy to upgrade over time. Google only guarantees your Chromebook will receive automatic updates of Chrome OS for a certain period.

If you’ve got a really old Chromebook it’s possible you’ve already stopped receiving updates. Chromebooks released from 2020 with the latest processors will receive updates for eight years. Some may even get updates for longer than this. Personally, I don’t think the Auto Update Policy is too bad because it allows Chrome OS to not get too bogged down by having to support out of date hardware.

However, I do understand some people are not too happy about the AUE date existing at all. The good news is in the future it’s most likely the Auto Update Policy for Chromebooks will be a thing of the past. This will be done by separating Chrome OS and the Chrome Browser, so you can still safely use your Chromebook even after the AUE date.

Until then, The AUE date still exists and if you want to check how to find this date on your Chromebook. Now you can because the information is readily available and it’s just a matter of knowing where to find it.
