Are Chromebooks without a touchscreen still worth buying?

are touchscreen chromebooks still worth buying

Go back a few years and nearly all the Chromebooks available had no touchscreen. This worked perfectly at the time because there was no real need for a touchscreen display.

However, Is it still worth buying a Chromebook without a touchscreen in 2019?

You would assume the answer was yes if you were to take a look at the Chromebooks currently available. Sure, there are now lots of Chromebooks with touchscreen capability but you’ll also find a lot of new budget Chromebooks that do not support one.

THE PRICE IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR

The main benefit of a Chromebook laptop without a touchscreen has got to be the price. The price you pay for your Chromebook is always something you need to consider when purchasing a new device.

That being said, you can buy Chromebooks that come as a Hybrid, which supports a touchscreen without paying much more than a none touchscreen laptop. So why would you opt for a device with less functionality? Well, there is a reason why you may decide to do this, and it comes down to the quality of the device.

A BUDGET HYBRID OFFERS A POOR DISPLAY

Yes, it’s true that you can get Hybrid Chromebooks in the budget sector. Hybrid devices allow you to use it as a laptop or tablet, so it has to have a touchscreen to work. However, you’ll also notice that most budget Hybrid Chromebooks have one thing in common. They usually lack a decent display.

If you’re lucking for a budget Chromebook laptop that offers true HD 1,920 by 1,080 then they can be easily found. Also, a display is never going to be that great if it does not come with IPS technology. You can find budget laptops without a touchscreen that offers all this for less than £250/$250.

If you take a look at the budget Hybrid devices they do not offer true HD because they offer a lower resolution. Also, most of the budget Hybrid devices do not come with an IPS panel.

SCREEN SIZE MATTERS

Everyone is different when it comes to choosing a display size that is suitable for them. However, most people who use a laptop on a daily basis opt for a 14-inch display. A 14-inch display is a standard for laptops because it’s the perfect size for most tasks.

There are plenty of budget Chromebook laptops that offer a 14-inch display, which makes them desirable to more people. Compare this to budget Hybrid devices and you’ll notice most of them come with much smaller display sizes. A display under 14-inches is only a good choice if it offers HD and IPS.

Most of the budget Hybrid devices offer an inferior display quality. This explains why there is still a market for the budget Chromebook 14-inch laptop sector without a touchscreen.

LIMITATIONS OF NOT HAVING A TOUCHSCREEN

The main reason why you would need a touchscreen on a Chromebook is to use Android Apps. All the new Chromebooks that have been released in the last 12 months support Android Apps.

Even Chromebooks without a touchscreen offer Android Apps. However, trying to use Android Apps without a touchscreen is a poor experience. Most Android apps have been designed to be used with a touchscreen, so you do notice limitations when you do not have a touchscreen device.

ONLY PAY FOR WHAT YOU NEED

There is, of course, a lot of people who are looking to buy a new Chromebook and using Android Apps is not an important factor. If this is the case then it makes perfect sense to not be interested in a touchscreen device.

If you’re only interested in a Chromebook to surf the internet, use a word processor or stream the occasional movie. Then it makes sense to opt for a none touchscreen model with a better display than a Hybrid with a poor display.

THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE

You do not need to settle for second best if you need a touchscreen but a budget Hybrid is not for you. Most manufacturers have realised that people looking for a budget 14-inch Chromebook laptop are also wanting touchscreen functionality.

To deal with this you may have noticed there is more than one model for 14-inch Chromebooks in the budget sector. The decent 14-inch budget laptops now come with both options. You can choose the same laptop but decide whether you want to opt for the touchscreen.

The downside to this is that it can cause confusion. I’ve seen many people buy a Chromebook assuming it would have a touchscreen. Only to find when they start using it that the functionality is not available. The reason for this is because you cannot easily recognise the difference between the none touchscreen and touchscreen models.

However, there is an easy way to spot the difference and that is the price. You’ll notice the touchscreen version is usually around £100/$100 more than the none touchscreen model.

CONCLUSION

If you are not a fan of a budget Hybrid then buying a Chromebook laptop without a touchscreen can be the right option for some. This is because you can buy budget Chromebooks with an excellent display, which you cannot get from a budget Hybrid.

The great thing is. If you do need a touchscreen then you don’t need to settle for second best. Most decent 14-inch Chromebooks now come with both buying options available. Just ensure you choose the right model because it can be confusing when the devices look exactly the same.
