If you’re looking for a budget no thrills Chromebook then you may be interested in the Acer 514-1H Chromebook. This Chrome OS device reminds me of the type of budget laptops running Chrome OS you used to see a few years ago. That’s not really a good thing because it lacks certain things I’d like to see from a 14-inch laptop.

This page is for the Acer 514-1H. A better spec model is available, which is the Acer 514-1HT

That being said, if you’re not too interested in having the best specs and the cost is more important to you. Then you may find the Acer 514 Chromebook offers everything you need. This is the thing with budget Chromebooks. For some people, they may offer what you want. If that’s the case then it makes sense buying one because why would you pay for something you don’t need.

THE SPECS

When you’re looking to buy a budget laptop the type of processor you’ll most likely end up with is an Intel Celeron processor. This is the processor used here. It’s a dual-core processor with a clock speed of 1.1 GHz and a turbo speed of 2.4 GHz. The Intel Celeron range of processors provides adequate performance for basic tasks. It will easily be able to handle internet surfing, social media, word processing and spreadsheets. These type of tasks don’t need a really powerful processor, so if that’s what you’ll be using your laptop for then you’ll have nothing to worry about. Huge spreadsheets may be out of the question though.

It’s capable of running Android apps but it may be slow at loading some of these apps into memory. So although you should be fine running most Android Apps. The main issue is they may just take a little longer to load. Intensive gaming Android Apps should be fine, but it’s not guaranteed you’ll get great performance.

The 4GB of RAM this laptop comes with is perfectly acceptable. You can easily carry out most tasks with 4GB of RAM, and any more RAM with an Intel Celeron would be a waste. The storage is a little low for what you’d expect to see when buying a Chromebook in 2021. However, if you’re using this laptop mainly for internet surfing then you don’t need too much local storage.

THE DISPLAY

One of my biggest concerns when buying a budget laptop is the display. This is one area where manufacturers tend to save money. This is understandable to some extent because they would not be able to offer the laptop at such a low price if they offered great specs. However, you can still get some budget Chromebooks that offer a decent display. Yes, they’ll most likely be more expensive than this particular model. So it would depend on whether you want a decent display and to spend more or prepared to work with a poorer display.

PLEASE NOTE: This model is the CB514-1H. A similar model is available CB514-1HT, which offers a touchscreen.

The display is something I can’t really forgive on any laptop. Even if you’re not paying much money. As far as I’m concerned there are certain standards we should expect. The Acer 514 display isn’t offering what I’d like to see. I accept this is a budget laptop, but the display is not up to standard when considering it comes with a 14-inch screen.

The resolution offered is a standard definition with a resolution of 1,366 by 768. If we were looking at a display of 12-inches or below then this would not be an issue considering the price. The problem is the standard definition on a 14-inch display isn’t going to impress. Also, the panel lacks IPS, so I would not expect you’ll get vivid colours and viewing at an angle may be difficult.

CHROMEBOOK TYPE

The Acer 514 is a laptop only. You can now get many Chromebooks, which are Hybrids. This means you can use the laptop as a tablet or laptop. Although it isn’t necessary to have a Hybrid device for a lot of tasks. If you were buying a laptop to use Android Apps then either a Hybrid or a laptop with a touchscreen display is what you should be looking for. There is no touchscreen offered, so I would not recommend this laptop if you’ll be using Android apps on a regular basis.

However, if you are just buying this laptop for internet surfing, online shopping, booking holidays and social media. Then you don’t really need to worry about it being a laptop only device.

AUE DATE

All Chromebooks come with an Automatic Update Expiry (AUE) date. Until this date is reached your Chromebook will continue to receive automatic updates of the Chrome OS operating system. These updates provide new functionality and improve the functionality already available. They also provide security updates, which help to keep you safe when surfing online. After the AUE date has expired you’ll stop receiving these updates.

CONNECTIVITY & OTHER SPECS

Connectivity is important to consider when buying a new laptop, but most people overlook this. The Acer 514 offers decent connectivity, so you’ll not have too much to worry about here. Two older type USB A ports are available, which means you can connect older hardware without any issues. The two newer type USB C ports also mean newer hardware with a Type C connection can also be connected. The benefits of USB Type C is that you can use these ports to charge your device and connect an external display.

It’s nice to see the Acer 514 comes with a Micro SD slot. This means you can easily add further storage at a later date using an SD card. This is perfect for anyone who likes to store their files locally. That being said, you should try and save most of your files in the cloud. The headphone jack and Bluetooth will allow you to connect either a wired or wireless pair of headphones.
