If you’re looking to buy a new Chromebook but not wanting to spend a fortune. Then you may be interested in this Acer 311 C722 Chromebook review. I’ve personally not owned a budget Chromebook since 2011. Back then budget Chromebooks were the only option. However, I’ve been using the Acer 311 C722 for a few weeks now and I’m pretty impressed with it.

Sure, if you’re after the best in technology then this Chromebook isn’t going to be for you. If on the other hand, you want a laptop to surf the internet, catch up on your social media and stream YouTube videos. Then I think you’ll be pretty happy with what the Acer 311 C722 Chromebook offers for the price. This is what you’ve got to consider when buying a Chromebook. You’ve got to weigh up what you’re getting for your money.

Build Quality

When it comes to the build quality I’m impressed with what the Acer 311 offers. It comes with an 11.6-inch display, so it’s a neat compact laptop, which is perfect to use on the go. It’s an all-plastic laptop and I would not expect to see anything else at the price. This Chromebook retails at $199.99/£199.99, which makes it one of the cheapest. The great thing about it being all plastic is that it’s really lightweight. Another reason why this laptop is perfect to use when travelling. Also, making it perfect for school children who need a laptop to take to school with them.

Acer 311 lid texture is great
The texture on the lid of the Acer 311

I love the texture of the lid, which makes the laptop look pretty special. Something else that makes it pretty special is the military certification MIL-STD-810G it has passed for impact resistance. This means you can drop this Chromebook on the floor from a few feet off the ground and it should still work. I have to say I do generally believe this Chromebook could survive a few knocks, as it feels robust. Another reason why I think this is a great choice for school children. This is the only Chromebook I’ve owned where I’ve felt I could throw it around without having to worry about it getting damaged.

Performance

The Acer 311 comes with a MediaTek processor, which is capable of a turbo speed of 2.2 GHz. This laptop has not been designed to offer amazing performance. That being said, it’s perfectly fine for internet surfing, social media and streaming YouTube videos. I thought I may get some issues streaming movies, but the Acer 311 coped with this with no problem at all. You can see this in the video review I made for the Acer 311 C722 Chromebook.

It comes with 4 GB of RAM, which is more than enough for a budget Chromebook. When you consider the processor it uses, any more RAM than this would be a complete waste. It’s a little low on storage at just 32 GB. Considering you can install Android Apps on this Chromebook. It would have been nice to see double the amount of storage. That’s one of the things that let this Chromebook down. If you’re looking for a Chromebook to install a lot of Android apps, then you may find this does not offer enough storage. Find out how much RAM you need for a Chromebook.

That being said, you’ll still be able to install a few apps on this laptop without any issues. Also, you should be saving all your other files in the cloud. If you do get into the habit of saving all of your files in the cloud. You’ll have more space to install your favourite Android Apps. Find out more about using cloud storage on your Chromebook.

Acer 311 C722 Display

The display offers a standard definition of 1,366 by 768, which means you’re not getting Full HD. This isn’t an issue though because you’d not find a Chromebook at this price offering Full HD on an 11.6-inch display. Find out more about whether you need a Full HD display when buying a Chromebook.

The UK version does not come with a touchscreen. I’m uncertain about whether this is the same for the USA version. Some websites suggest you do get a touchscreen, but I can’t confirm this is the case. Not having a touchscreen isn’t a major issue at this price, but it may mean some Android apps that work better with touchscreen are going to be harder to use. It’s a laptop only device, so you cannot use it as a tablet in Hybrid mode. No big issue for anyone looking for a laptop for internet surfing.

The main concern I have with the display is the panel used. Instead of using an IPS panel, which I feel offers the best quality display. They’ve used a cheaper TN panel. It’s perfectly fine to use, but this is only the case if you are looking at the display directly. If you look at the display from an angle then you’ll notice a deterioration of the image or text displayed. Considering the price though, I think it’s fine, but if you’re used to an IPS panel you may be a little disappointed.

Keyboard & Connectivity

You’ll be happy to know the Acer 311 offers both USB type A and C. This means you’ll be able to use your older and newer peripherals without any issues. Also, the USB Type C port can be used for charging the laptop and connecting an external display.

There is no Micro SD slot, so you’ll not be able to add further storage at a later date. This is possibly going to be an issue for some considering the low internal storage that comes as standard.

Acer 311 keyboard
Acer 311 C722 keyboard is fine for typing

The keyboard isn’t backlit, which is perfectly fine for the price. I’ve typed a few articles using this Chromebook and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s not as good as some of the keyboards you get with more expensive laptops. That being said, I have had no issues touch-typing at speed with the Acer 311. The keys are well spaced out, so no issues at all.

Battery life

This is something I’m really impressed with. All Chromebooks are known for having a great battery life. The Acer 311 C722 battery lasts for at least 14 hours from a single charge. This is great because you can use this laptop for a couple of days without needing to charge it.

This is one of the advantages of a budget Chromebook. The processor takes up very little power and the smaller 11.6-inch display also helps keep battery use to a minimum.

Conclusion

This Chromebook isn’t going to be for everyone. Although I think for the price it’s a great laptop. This isn’t going to be a laptop for anyone looking for the best cutting-edge technology. This laptop is perfect for anyone who wants a laptop without spending too much money.

Don’t expect this laptop to perform at amazing speed because the processor simply isn’t up to it. You can stream videos without any issues and it’s perfect for internet surfing and social media. Android Apps are possible on this laptop but any gaming apps with advanced graphics may take a while to load.

I think this is the perfect laptop if you need to have access to a Chromebook when you’re on the move. It’s extremely compact and lightweight and will easily fit into a backpack. It’s also perfect for education as well, which is mainly down to the impact resistance this Chromebook offers. If you’re unsure whether this is the one for you.
