Acer 15 CB515-1HT Chromebook Review

The Acer 15 Chromebook is a rare laptop and this is because it’s one of the only Chromebooks you can buy with such a huge display. Have a read of this full Acer 15 Chromebook review to see if this laptop is right for you.

PLEASE NOTE: This review is of the Acer 15 CB515-1HT model

The only other Chromebook currently available with a 15-inch + display is the Lenovo Yoga C630. However, the Lenovo is a high spec model and costs considerably more. If you’re looking for a budget Chromebook with a 15.6-inch display then the Acer 15 is the only model currently available.

The Acer 15 is a really cool looking laptop. It’s obviously much bigger than most others and this is due to the huge 15.6-inch display that you get. It has an all-over aluminium chassis, which makes the Acer 15 look a lot more expensive than it actually is.

It’s not a hybrid, so it cannot be used in tablet mode. However, it does have a touchscreen display, so you can use Android Apps on the Acer 15 without any problems. Also, when you consider the size of the display. It’s unlikely you would ever want to use it as a tablet. So I would not let the fact it does not support tablet mode put you off.

It weighs in at 1.95kg, so it isn’t the lightest Chromebook around. It may not be suitable for travelling on a daily basis because you may struggle to get the rather big chassis into your bag.

The keyboard works fine and the huge amount of space available means the keys are well spaced out. It also means there is extra space, which Acer has used to supply two top-loading speakers. You don’t normally see this on a Chromebook because there isn’t usually the space for it. So it’s good to see Acer took advantage of all the space they had on offer.

The Acer 15 comes with an Intel Pentium N4200 processor, which comes with a base speed of 1.10 GHz but is capable of reaching speeds of 2.40 GHz when needed.

It’s worth remembering the Acer 15 is a budget Chromebook, so you should not expect the device to be able to cope with all tasks. If you’re looking for a Chromebook for multi-tasking or to play Android games that need some serious processing power, then you may want to look elsewhere. You’d have to buy a high spec Chromebook. If you’re interested in a high-spec Chromebook then take a look at The Top Ten Chromebooks in 2019.

That being said, when it comes to daily tasks such as surfing the internet or streaming a movie then the Acer 15 performs fine. It also performs well with most of the Android Apps that are currently in the play store. However, as mentioned, it may struggle if you want to play games with advanced 3D graphics.

The 4GB of memory that comes with the Acer 15 is perfectly acceptable for a budget Chromebook. I would say 4GB is the absolute minimum you should be looking for when buying a new Chromebook.

When you consider the types of tasks you will be using the Acer 15 for, then the 4GB of RAM should not cause you any problems at all.

It also comes with 64GB of storage, which is really good to see from a Chromebook in this price range. Even some higher-spec Chromebooks only come with this amount of storage. This is really good to see because it means you’ll be able to install all of your favourite Android Apps without any problems.

You’ll also have ample of room left over to store files locally should you wish. However, you should also take advantage of how well the Chromebook and Google Drive work together. By using Google Drive to store your files, it will save your local storage for more Android Apps.

It’s definitely the display that separates the Acer 15 from all other Chromebooks. It comes with a huge 15.6-inch display, which for a laptop is big. This may not be suitable for everyone, but if you love a big screen you’ll be happy with what is on offer here.

The great thing about the Acer 15 is the display quality. It’s all too often that you see budget Chromebooks fail when it comes to the display. That certainly isn’t the case here.

The Acer 15 has a fantastic display
The touchscreen display is perfect for Android Apps

That huge 15.6-inch display comes with a full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080. This makes the image quality fantastic and works perfectly with the display size. However, Acer did not stop there, as the Acer 15 also comes with an IPS panel. This provides you with crisp images and vibrant colours that are rare to see on a budget Chromebook.

The IPS panel also means you get great viewing angles from the Acer 15 Chromebook. This is really important when you get a display of this size because it’s more likely that you may want to share your display with friends. Watching a movie with a friend on the Acer 15 will keep you both entertained because the image quality does not deteriorate even if viewing from an angle.

It’s also really good to see that the display supports touchscreen. Using a touchscreen on a 15.6-inch display is a really good experience. It’s also great for anyone looking for a laptop where they can take advantage of Android Apps.

The battery life is really impressive. All manufacturers give a battery life but in reality, you can always shave a couple of hours off what they provide in the small print. That is not the case with the Acer 15. The battery life is absolutely amazing.

Acer suggests you can get 12 hours from a fully charged battery. Well, guess what, for once, the claim is actually true. The Acer 15 has a staggering battery life of just under 12 hours. When you consider that huge display this is a very impressive point about this device.

Nicely spaced out keys and front-loading speakers

When it comes to connectivity there is nothing to be concerned about either. This is thanks to the Acer 15 supporting both older USB 3.1 and the newer Type-C USB ports. This means you do not have to worry about any of your current peripherals being compatible.

If you’re looking for a Chromebook with a huge display then this is without question the one for you. It has a fantastic display that cannot be underestimated for a Chromebook in this price range.

It’s perfect for watching movies or working on huge spreadsheets and the added touchscreen is really nice to see. Personally, I think this Chromebook is an absolute steal at the price. When you consider what you’re getting you cannot really go wrong.

If a 14-inch laptop is just not enough for you. Then this may be the one for you.
